Abate Fountain

Abate Fountain

The Abate Fountain is one of the most distinctive historic sites in Alcara Li Fusi, a valuable testament to the village’s ancient history and the community’s deep connection with water. Situated in an area rich in charm and tradition, the fountain remains one of the town’s most recognisable landmarks to this day.

The structure consists of seven springs feeding a long stone basin approximately nine metres long and two metres wide. The water flows ceaselessly, creating a cool and evocative atmosphere that, over the centuries, has served as an important meeting place and hub of daily life for the village’s inhabitants.

According to tradition, the fountain was built in pre-Arab times, when Alcara Li Fusi was still known as Turiano. Testifying to the monument’s antiquity are several Latin inscriptions still visible on the rear wall, which rises several metres and preserves fragments of the original structure. These features make the Abate Fountain a rare example of historic water architecture in the Nebrodi region.

Over the centuries, the fountain has suffered various instances of damage caused by natural events. The earthquake of 1490 severely damaged the rear wall, which was, however, rebuilt shortly afterwards. Another collapse occurred in 1841 due to a landslide caused by water seepage. On that occasion too, the community acted swiftly to restore the structure, replacing the ancient stone slabs and the decorative eagle that still adorn the complex today.

Next to the main fountain is a small basin fed by two further jets of water, whilst a large covered public washhouse stands nearby. This space, equipped with twenty-four stone basins, each with its own water flow, was once used by the village women for washing clothes and served as an important venue for social gatherings and community life.

The Abate Fountain still retains the authentic charm of ancient Sicilian public works, recounting through water, stone and inscriptions the long history of Alcara Li Fusi and its folk traditions.
