Hercules’ Temple

Hercules’ Temple

The Hercules’ Temple of san Marco d’Alunzio dates back to the IV century B.C. It was used used very probably for sporting activities connected to the cult of Hercules, presents itself in the doric style, with a rectangular plan, with pronaos on the front, the structure “in antis” and with side walls terminating in two wings between which it raised two columns. Its construction, with isodoma structure, is in rectangular ashlars of tufa stone, a particular type of spongy travertine extracted, probably from a recess present in the valley of the rosemary. There is now a single cell, sacred area reserved to priests, (originally positioned inside a vast area sacrificial) and transformed by the Normans into a Christian church dedicated to St Mark the Evangelist, which maintained its role of matrix until the XVI century.
