The Church of Santa Maria Pura, situated near Vico del Gargano, stands in a picturesque setting at the foot of the ancient Civita, close to a stream that feeds into the River Asciatizzi, one of the few perennial watercourses in the Gargano. This watercourse, having gathered water from numerous springs, continues its course until it flows into the sea in the area of Rodi Garganico.
The building features an architectural layout dating from the 16th to the 17th century and is distinguished by its richly decorated interior, embellished with statues and ornaments carved from local soft stone, characteristic of the Lecce Baroque style.
The church’s name is linked to an ancient and moving tradition: children and young virgins were in fact buried within it, as attested by the “Book of the Dead” kept in the Mother Church, containing records dating back to the 17th century.
According to local tradition, the church may stand on even older foundations, possibly linked to the legendary temple of Calcante; however, this hypothesis is not supported by documented archaeological evidence.
Adjacent to the church is an annexe, now restored, which was used as a hospital by the Fatebenefratelli in the 18th century, intended for the care of sick soldiers.
Set in a natural and historical setting of great charm, Santa Maria Pura is a place steeped in history, where devotion, folk traditions and legendary tales intertwine harmoniously.
