Mother Church of the Blessed Virgin of the Assumption

Mother Church of the Blessed Virgin of the Assumption

The Mother Church dedicated to the Blessed Virgin of the Assumption in Vico del Gargano stands in a picturesque location next to the castle, overlooking the ancient town layout with its elegant and solemn presence.

The façade, simple yet harmonious, is topped by a triangular pediment and adorned with a stone entablature portal. The lintel, decorated with plant motifs and supported by two half-columns, bears an inscription bearing the date 1675, bearing witness to a significant phase in the building’s history. Completing the external profile, the square-plan bell tower and the ribbed dome rise above the urban fabric, becoming distinctive features of the town’s skyline.

The interior is laid out in a three-nave plan, with a long central nave flanked by two side aisles illuminated by five large windows on each side, which bathe the space in diffused light. The church houses eleven altars, each linked to local devotions and patrons: among these, the altar dedicated to Saint Valentine, patron saint of the village, and that of the Most Holy Crucifix, once under the patronage of Troiano Spinelli, Marquis of Vico, stand out.

A large arch, supported by sturdy pillars, marks the transition between the nave and the chancel, creating a clear division between the spaces. Flanking the chancel are elegant carved wooden pews arranged in two tiers, whilst at the centre stands the high altar, adorned with an oil painting depicting the Assumption flanked by Saint Peter, Saint Lawrence and Saint Dominic.

During the 18th century, the church was granted the title of Collegiate Church, a recognition that underscores its religious and institutional importance within the community. Even today, it remains one of the principal places of worship in Vico del Gargano, a guardian of history, art and devotion deeply rooted in the local area.
