Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta

The Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta dominates Camogli’s picturesque harbor from above, built on a rocky outcrop known as “l’Isola,” the medieval core of the Ligurian village. Its origins date back to the 12th century, when it was built as a castle chapel. Over the centuries, the building underwent numerous extensions and transformations, particularly in the 16th century and then in the 19th, culminating in its official consecration in 1826. In 1988, on the occasion of the Marian Year, Pope John Paul II gave it the title of minor basilica, recognizing its historical and spiritual value.

To reach it, one ascends from Piazza Colombo along a monumental flight of steps that leads to the churchyard, decorated with the traditional “risseu” technique, or mosaics of white and gray pebbles typical of Ligurian seaside villages. This cobblestones accompanies the visitor up to the main facade, sober and essential, in stark contrast to the magnificence of the interior.

The interior of the basilica, with three naves in classical Baroque style, is a spectacle of light, color and decoration: gilded stucco, polychrome marble, 19th-century frescoes, crystal chandeliers and an atmosphere enriched by the warm light of candles. The decorations were entrusted to architect Dufour, while the frescoes of the vault and side chapels are the work of Nicolò Barabino and Francesco Semino, important exponents of the Genoese school.

Also of great artistic significance are the sculptural and pictorial works signed by Francesco Maria Schiaffino, Francesco Ravaschio, Luca Cambiaso, Domenico Fiasella and Bernardo Castello. The high altar, adorned with a wooden statue of the Assumption made by Bernardo Schiaffino, is the work of sculptor Andrea Casareggio, while the precious 18th-century wooden choir lends further solemnity to the environment.

In the sacristy, in the Baroque style of Chiavarese dating from 1790, is a canvas depicting the Deposition by Luca Cambiaso, another example of the artistic richness kept in this sacred place. Another jewel is the organ built in 1873 by Luigi Lingiardi, restored in 1988.

Finally, on the wall of a house facing the churchyard, a ceramic mural created in 2006 by Alessia Ratti stands out, depicting the “Island” in 1518, a reminder of the village’s maritime and spiritual past.

The Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta is today the spiritual heart of Camogli, a place that enchants with its architectural beauty and striking panoramic position overlooking the sea, just a few steps from Dragonara Castle, another historic symbol of the village. Visiting it with all the lights on provides a unique experience of recollection and awe, in a context where faith, art and landscape come together in perfect harmony.
