The Fortress of Montalcino overlooks the famous village of Montalcino and is one of the most fascinating symbols of Sienese medieval history. Construction began in 1361 by the Sienese, based on a design by Mino Foresi and Domenico di Feo. The fortress was built by reusing parts of the ancient city walls and towers from the previous century, immediately assuming a strategic role in the defence of the territory.
Its distinctive irregular pentagonal layout represented an innovative solution for the time compared to traditional quadrangular fortifications. At the corners stand slender towers crowned with small arches and battlements that are still well-preserved today, whilst the picturesque walkway runs along the walls, fully accessible and offering spectacular views over the hills of the Val d’Orcia.
The fortress was built on the highest point of the village and incorporated pre-existing structures, including the Tower of San Giovanni, the keep of San Martino and even an ancient three-nave medieval basilica, which was later converted into the castle chapel.
The Rocca di Montalcino is best remembered for its historic role in the mid-16th century, when it became the last bastion of the Republic of Siena’s glorious resistance against the Spanish-Florentine troops led by the Medici. After the fall of Siena in 1555, Montalcino continued to hold out for several years, becoming a symbol of the defence of Sienese freedom. It was precisely after the final surrender in 1559 that Cosimo I de’ Medici had the large outer bastion built on the south side to further strengthen the defensive structure.
Even today, the fortress retains almost all of its original appearance thanks to major restoration work carried out in the 20th century. Inside, there is a large courtyard that hosts performances, cultural events and gatherings, transforming this ancient military garrison into a vibrant cultural space.
From the ramparts and towers, one can admire a breathtaking panorama that takes in the Tuscan hills, the Brunello vineyards and the splendid countryside of the Val d’Orcia, making a visit to the Fortress of Montalcino a unique experience combining history, art and landscape.
