Parish Church of San Michele

Parish Church of San Michele

The Parish Church of San Michele in Celle Ligure is one of the oldest and most significant religious buildings in the area, closely linked to the origins of the village.

The presence of a church on this site is documented as early as the 12th century, although it is believed that the site was used for religious purposes from earlier times, as suggested by its location some distance from the sea. The original building, which was smaller and oriented differently from the present one, has left few traces: among these are the late 13th-century bell tower, still visible today, and some works preserved inside.

The present church is the result of numerous alterations carried out over the centuries. Construction began in 1630 and continued for over fifteen years, whilst the façade was redesigned in 1828 and further modified at the end of the 19th century, when the fresco and the cladding of the pilasters that define its present appearance were created.

The layout consists of three naves: the central nave, wider and brighter, dominates the space, whilst the lower side aisles open onto a series of chapels that enrich the interior layout. The overall effect is harmonious and elegant, an expression of a ‘restrained Baroque’ style typical of Ligurian churches, where decorative elements and simplicity coexist in balance.

The interior houses a rich artistic heritage comprising frescoes, sculptures, paintings and sacred furnishings. Among the most important works is the famous polyptych created in 1535 by Perin del Vaga, one of the masterpieces of Ligurian Renaissance art. Restored several times over the centuries, this painting is of great historical and artistic value to the church.

The sacristy houses further treasures, including a slate bas-relief from the ancient church, a 15th-century marble tabernacle and a small polychrome wooden statue from 1481 depicting St Michael the Archangel in the act of defeating the devil.

Rich in history and art, the Church of San Michele is today a place that tells the story of centuries of faith and transformation, whilst retaining its central role in the religious life of Celle Ligure.
