The Mother Church of Specchia is one of the village’s most iconic religious buildings, a testament to local devotion and the artistic richness of the Salento region.
Built in 1605, it features Baroque architecture, which was subsequently modified during the 18th century. It was during this period, in fact, that the church was enlarged to accommodate the growing population: the side aisles were added and the façade and central nave were renovated, giving the building a more spacious and harmonious appearance.
The interior is distinguished by the elegance of the Lecce stone pillars, finished with Venetian stucco, and by the triumphal arches decorated with floral motifs, typical of the Salento Baroque style. In the apse, which originally featured five niches, two have been converted into windows, altering the original layout but improving the lighting of the space.
Among the most notable features is the Altar of the Annunciation, which houses a votive painting depicting a member of the Protonobilissimo family alongside his wife, bearing witness to the strong presence of noble families in the town’s religious life.
Next to the church stands the bell tower, approximately 19 metres high, with a square tower structure and four pointed-arch windows at the top. Its commanding position makes it a visual landmark for the entire historic centre.
The Mother Church is today the spiritual heart of Specchia, a place where history, art and tradition continue to converge and tell the story of the village’s identity.
