Erice is a jewel set in the heart of Sicily, a medieval town that rises majestically on top of the mountain of the same name, 751 meters above sea level. This charming town, located in the province of Trapani, is famous not only for its breathtaking views but also for a rich history and craft traditions rooted in centuries. Seen from the valley, Erice appears as an extraordinary terrace overlooking the sea, capable of fascinating anyone who approaches it with its cobblestone streets, ancient churches and architecture reflecting the influence of different dominations.

The history of Erice, according to Thucydides, begins with the arrival of Trojan exiles. These fugitives, seeking a new life, founded the village, giving rise to the legendary people of the Elymians. Also mentioned by Virgil in the Aeneid, Erice is inextricably linked to the mythological figures of Aeneas and his offspring. During the Roman period, the cult of Venus Ericina became predominant, evidenced by the great temple dedicated to the goddess, which welcomed sailors and pilgrims from all over. Sacred flames lit by the priestesses of Venus guided travelers seeking protection and blessing on their sea voyages. Today, on those remains stands the striking Castle of Venus, built by the Normans in the 12th century, one of the symbols of the town.

The atmosphere of Erice is steeped in history and legend. Walking through the narrow streets, one can feel the charm of the Middle Ages, a time when this town was an important center of trade and cultural exchange. Churches, such as the Mother or Matrix Church, and the more than sixty chapels and places of worship scattered throughout the village, offer a journey through time. Every corner of Erice tells a story, from monasteries and watchtowers to Baroque palaces and Art Nouveau-style openings. Each structure bears witness to the tumultuous and rich cultural heritage of this place, which has seen various civilizations and cultures pass by.

In addition to its history, Erice is also famous for its "Ettore Majorana" Center for Scientific Culture, founded by renowned scientist Antonino Zichichi. This institution attracts scholars and researchers from all over the world as it deals with important issues related to science, the environment, technology and global emergencies. This dialogue between science and culture is intertwined with Erice's traditional heritage, creating a stimulating and vibrant environment.

When talking about Erice, one cannot overlook the craft and gastronomic traditions. The typical ceramics, true works of art, decorated with bright colors and traditional motifs, are a must for every visitor. Carpets made on ancient looms tell of the craftsmanship that has been handed down from generation to generation. And then there are the sweets, the recipes for which are often jealously guarded by the cloistered nuns: genovese, a shortbread dessert filled with cream; mustazzoli, aromatic cookies made of hard, crisp dough; riposto cakes, filled with citron preserves and richly decorated with pastel-colored icing; almond morsels; quaresimali, the beautiful and ugly; and the fragrant Martorana fruits.

Erice is not only a place to visit, but an experience to live. The panoramic views it offers of the Egadi Islands and Mount Cofano, embraced by a cool, temperate climate, are a treat for the eyes. The crisp air, the enchanted atmospheres of misty days or the beautiful sunny days create a landscape that is constantly changing, always offering new emotions and discoveries.

The village has kept its charm intact over time, and for many visitors it may seem that a new aspect of this enchanting place can be discovered with each visit. The narrow alleys offer the opportunity to explore artisan stores, where one can find unique items to take home as souvenirs. Pastry shops, with their windows glittering with sweets, invite a stop to savor local delicacies.

Erice is a place where the past meets the present, a corner of Sicily that manages to capture the hearts of those who visit. Between history, art, culture and gastronomy, this medieval town is a must-see for those who wish to discover the riches of Sicily and be overwhelmed by its magical atmosphere.
