Marostica

Marostica is known all over the world for its splendid square, considered one of the most beautiful and striking squares in the Veneto region, at the center of which a real chessboard is drawn. Every weekend in September of even-numbered years, it brings to life the story of the daughter of the Castellan of Marostica and the two young men Rinaldo d’Angarano and Vieri da Vallonara who vie for the hand of the beautiful Lionora.

Marostica, nestled between the rolling hills of the province of Vicenza and the majestic slopes of the Asiago Plateau, is a village that exudes extraordinary beauty, rich in history and tradition. This little gem is world famous for its peculiar "Living Chess Game", a historical and cultural reenactment that transforms the Castle Square into an elegant medieval stage. Every two years, on the second weekend in September, citizens and visitors can witness an epic challenge between noble contenders as they play chess to win the heart of the beautiful Lionora, daughter of the Castellan.

The Piazza del Castello is the beating heart of Marostica, an evocative place characterized by a real chessboard drawn on its floor, where the figurants wear period costumes and the stories of knights and nobles come to life. Here, time seems to stand still, and the atmosphere here is a fascinating mix of culture, art and folklore. Legend has it that in 1454, the two nobles Rinaldo d'Angarano and Vieri da Vallonara, in love with the same woman, challenged each other to chess to avoid a bloody battle. This event marked the history and identity of Marostica, turning it into the "City of Chess."

The Lower Castle, an imposing construction commissioned by the Scaligeris in the 14th century, stands as the guardian of the square. Today it is home to the Town Hall and the history that has shaped the village over the centuries. The building is distinguished by its red hues and architecture reminiscent of a medieval fortress. Inside, you can admire frescoes of great artistic value, a portal with mullioned windows and, in the loggia, the emblems of the Venetian podestà. On the main floor, the small museum houses stage costumes, weapons, and objects representative of the traditional game of chess.

Not far from the Lower Castle is the Upper Castle, located on the Pausolino Hill, of which only the keep and portals remain, but which offers a breathtaking view of the entire valley. From here, visitors can walk the Sentiero dei Carmini, a scenic path that winds along the ancient walls, allowing them to admire the scenic beauty of Marostica and its surroundings, where woods and meadows alternate with striking views.

Handicraft and food and wine specialties

Marostica is not only history and culture, but also boasts an important craft tradition related to straw processing, an activity that characterized the local economy until the 1960s. In addition, the cherry trees that dot the surrounding hills are a source of pride for the local community, and Marostica's cherry production is celebrated every spring through a lively festival, drawing visitors from all over. Famous for their sweet flavor and quality, many of the fruits produced in this area can boast the IGP label, recognizing their gastronomic value.

Marostica also offers unique culinary experiences, making the village a taste itinerary where local specialties and traditional dishes come together in an unmissable sensory experience. The olive groves and cherry trees that dot the landscape not only beautify the landscape, but are also the basis of a genuine cuisine rich in flavor.

Visit Marostica

This charming municipality is a place of a thousand opportunities for those who love nature, sports and slow tourism. Lovers of outdoor activities can explore trails surrounded by greenery, enjoy scenic hikes and the naturalistic glimpses that only an area rich in history can offer. The area is also perfect for those who want to discover local traditions through experiences that bring them closer to rural culture and typical products.

In short, Marostica is more than just a tourist destination; it is a place where the past blends harmoniously with the present, giving anyone who visits it an experience involving history, culture, gastronomy and nature. The town invites everyone to "Love, Live and Visit," and once here, you can see why. Marostica is a village to discover and experience, a corner of Italy that manages to enchant and amaze, jealously guarding its traditions and heritage. Those who participate in the Chess Game, or simply stroll through its historic alleys, will surely have an indelible memory of this magical place.
