San Felice Circeo

San Felice Circeo

San Felice Circeo, a charming seaside village in Lazio, is a place rooted in a millennia-old past marked by the legend of Ulysses and the Sorceress Circe. This town, which stands on the splendid platform of the Circeo promontory, is a blend of history, myths, natural beauty and culture.

Located in the province of Latina, about 100 meters above sea level, the village offers a breathtaking sight, with the crystal clear sea on one side and the imposing Monte Circeo looming on the other.

The name “Circeo” is not accidental, as history and mythology merge inextricably in this corner of paradise. It was here, according to Homer’s Odyssey, that Ulysses and his companions came across the Sorceress Circe, a mythological figure who, according to legend, turned Ulysses’ men into pigs. This myth lends a mysterious and fascinating aura to San Felice Circeo, which, in addition to the beauty of the landscape, also attracts for its legendary history and archaeological heritage.

History and monuments

The history of San Felice Circeo dates back to ancient times. As early as prehistoric times, the promontory was inhabited by Neanderthal man, evidenced by the caves that dot the area, some of which can still be visited. Over the centuries, Circeo has been an important trading center, first as a Roman colony, then as a Templar possession during the Middle Ages, and later a fief of the powerful Caetani family.

In the historic center of San Felice Circeo, one of the main attractions is the Templar Tower, erected between 1240 and 1259. This tower, a symbol of defense and power, overlooks the town’s main square and is a starting point for a journey into the past. The clock that adorns the tower was installed in the early 19th century, and is another tangible sign of how time runs indifferently over this village. Next to the tower stands the 14th-century Baronial Palace, which now houses the village’s town hall.

Another element that characterizes San Felice Circeo are the Papal Towers, erected in the second half of the 16th century to defend the promontory from raids by Saracen pirates. The towers, built by the Caetani family on the orders of Pope Pius IV, are still visible along the cliff. Of these, Torre Paola is the one that has retained its original structure, while the others were destroyed by the British in 1809.

The Lighthouse and the Acropolis

Another point of interest is the Capo Circeo Lighthouse, built in 1866, which is located about three kilometers from the town. Located on the side of the Quarto Caldo promontory, the lighthouse is a must-see for those who wish to admire the Latium coast from a vantage point.

The Acropolis of Circeii, probably built in the 3rd century B.C., stands on a rocky outcrop overlooking the village. This archaeological site represented the defensive bulwark of the ancient city and offers spectacular panoramic views of the sea and the surrounding area.

Nature and the sea

San Felice Circeo is a perfect place for nature lovers. The Circeo promontory, which rises majestically over the Agro Pontino, is a nature reserve rich in flora and fauna, ideal for hiking and mountain biking. The trails that run along Mount Circeo, such as the Crocette road and the Faro road, allow you to immerse yourself in the greenery and discover breathtaking landscapes.

The sea is, of course, one of San Felice Circeo’s main attractions. Its beaches, including Torre Vittoria, Porto beach and Torre Olevola beach, are famous for their crystal clear water and fine sand. For those seeking a more intimate dimension, coves such as La Rinascente, Le Batterie and Prigioniero beach, accessible only by sea, are perfect for a boat trip.

Culture and gastronomy

In addition to its natural and historical beauty, San Felice Circeo is also a place rich in culinary traditions. Seafood dishes are the absolute protagonists of the local cuisine, with dishes based on fresh fish and seafood. There is no shortage, however, of typical dishes based on dairy products, such as caciotta and buffalo mozzarella, and local wines, including Circeo Rosso DOC, Cesanese del Piglio and Cannellino. In the heart of the village are numerous restaurants and trattorias where these delicacies can be enjoyed.

San Felice Circeo is a place that combines history, myth, nature and gastronomy in a perfect mix. Whether exploring its fascinating historic center, hiking the promontory, or relaxing on its beaches, this village offers a complete experience for those seeking an escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. With its mild climate, natural beauty, and magical atmosphere, San Felice Circeo is an ideal destination for those who want to immerse themselves in the history and legend of a timeless place.
