Casale Marittimo

Casale Marittimo

Perched on a hill overlooking the Val di Cecina, Casale Marittimo is one of those villages that makes an immediate impression, even before you set foot inside. Its silhouette, made up of perfectly preserved stone and terracotta houses, seems to rise from the green Tuscan countryside, gazing out towards the sea of the Etruscan Coast, just twelve kilometres away. On clear days, the view stretches as far as the islands of the Tuscan Archipelago, offering panoramas that blend the gentle rolling hills with the breath of the sea.

Strolling through its narrow streets is like stepping into a small world frozen in time. Casale Marittimo is laid out in a distinctive pattern of concentric rings, following the ancient medieval walls, which are still visible in the town’s layout. At its heart lies the ancient castle, now surrounded by houses but still recognisable in the architectural details that tell the story of centuries of history.

Among the town’s landmarks, the Clock Tower, the Casa del Camarlingo – once part of the defensive walls – and the Pieve di Sant’Andrea, rebuilt in the 19th century on the ruins of the ancient church, stand out. Not far away is also the Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie, a testament to the spirituality and community life of the village. It is no coincidence that Casale Marittimo has been awarded the Italian Touring Club’s Orange Flag, a distinction reserved for destinations that excel in hospitality and the quality of their heritage.

A region steeped in thousands of years of history

The roots of Casale Marittimo stretch back much further than the Middle Ages. As early as the 7th century BC, this area was an important Etruscan settlement, serving as a strategic outpost for Volterra towards the sea. The most extraordinary evidence comes from the Casa Nocera Necropolis, where the famous statues of the Warrior Princes were discovered: unique works, considered among the oldest sculptures in the round in European art, now preserved at the National Archaeological Museum in Florence.

The surrounding area also features the remains of Roman villas and ancient tholos tombs, evidence of a continuous settlement spanning eras and civilisations. This rich tapestry of history makes the area a veritable archaeological treasure trove nestled within nature.

Nature, wine and flavours of the Etruscan Coast

The village is surrounded by lush countryside, featuring olive groves, vineyards and cultivated fields. This is where local specialities such as extra virgin olive oil, honey, cereals and, above all, Montescudaio DOC wine are produced – a true reflection of this corner of Tuscany. Casale Marittimo lies along the picturesque Etruscan Coast Wine Route, a journey that combines landscapes, villages and flavours into a complete experience.

The local cuisine reflects this richness: traditional peasant dishes, game, cured meats and recipes rooted in the local area accompany every visit with intense, authentic flavours.

Events, traditions and an authentic atmosphere

Throughout the year, the village comes alive with a packed calendar of events that showcase its true character. From spring to autumn, there is a succession of festivals and local celebrations: among the most eagerly awaited are the Snail Festival in July and the Wild Boar Festival in August, perfect opportunities to immerse yourself in local flavours.

Particularly enchanting is taking part in the Romantic Night of the Villages, when the village is bathed in soft lighting, music and art installations, creating an intimate and captivating atmosphere. And then there are the traditional festivals, such as the Diotto, which bring back to life the memories, sounds and scents of times gone by.

Casale Marittimo is a village that is not merely a place to visit, but one to be savoured at a leisurely pace. It is made up of unforgettable views, stones that tell ancient stories, and traditions that continue to thrive today. A place where every step, through narrow streets and over hills, becomes a journey into the heart of authentic Tuscany.
