Baptistery of St John the Baptist

In the heart of Lenno, a hamlet of the picturesque Tremezzina on the shores of Lake Como, stands the striking Baptistery of St John the Baptist, an authentic masterpiece of Lombard Romanesque architecture. Built towards the end of the 11th century, it represents one of the best preserved religious buildings in the area in terms of its original appearance.

Architecture and structure

The baptistery has an octagonal plan, a symbol of rebirth and divine perfection, with a polygonal apse and a small square bell tower rising above the central oculus of the segmental vault. The simple but harmonious facade is divided into three fornixes: two blind side ones and a central architraved one with a round lunette. The masonry is composed of irregular blocks of Moltrasio stone, arranged in courses that are not perfectly homogeneous, while the roof is made of stone slabs.

This composition gives the baptistery an austere and authentic charm, perfectly integrated into the historical and landscape context of the village.

Inside the building are remains of medieval frescoes, evidence of its original baptismal function, flanked by Baroque paintings added in later periods. The environment is essential and intimate, ideal for reflection and introspection, and exudes a deep atmosphere of spirituality and memory.

A place between past and present

Currently, the Baptistery of St. John the Baptist no longer serves its original liturgical function, but has been converted to an exhibition hall, hosting contemporary art exhibitions. This new cultural life enhances the space, keeping its presence alive in the urban fabric of Lenno.

Located in Piazza XI Febbraio, a short distance from the parish church of Santo Stefano, the baptistery is easily recognizable and is an essential stop for those who wish to discover the most authentic soul of Tremezzina, between history, art and architecture.
