Following the numerous earthquakes that struck the region beginning in 1659 and the devastating earthquake of 1783, only magnificent ruins remain of what was once a huge place of faith, culture and power, modeled on the Escorial in Madrid. In 1838 came the reconstruction of a new House, also known as San Domenico Nuovo, to serve as a Shrine and Convent for the community of friars.
Here is preserved the miraculous Canvas of the Saint, called the Achiropita (not painted by human hand and the yarn has no beginning or end), delivered to Friar Lawrence La Grotteria on the night of Sept. 14-1530 by the Blessed Virgin Mary, St. Catherine of Alexandria and Mary Magdalene.
The linden wood statue depicting St. Dominic preaching, dated 1855, has also been the protagonist of documented miraculous events. In fact, Soriano has in the past been a destination for thaumaturgical pilgrimages, recognized by the Holy See.
