Located in the central square of Spigno Monferrato, once known as “Tower Square” due to the presence of a tower later demolished in the late 18th century after an earthquake, the Fountain of Leda and the Swan is an elegant example of street furniture inspired by classical mythology. Built in 1914, the fountain has two levels: the upper, decorative basin and the lower, larger and more functional basin fed by two taps.
In the center of the work stands a sculpture of a female figure flanked by a swan, a clear reference to the Greek myth of Leda and Zeus. According to the legend, Leda, queen of Sparta, was seduced by Zeus, who, in order to approach her, assumed the form of a swan while she was standing along a stream. From this mythical union legendary characters were born, including Helen of.
In addition to being a fine homage to ancient mythology, the fountain is a symbolic landmark for the town, tying art, history and legend into one evocative sight.
