Located just outside the old castle walls, near the current Town Hall, the Fonte di Bacco is one of the most charming and historically rich spots in Bibbona. This historic complex is made up of two sections, separated by the road: the upper part, known as the “Arco di Bacco”, and the lower part, which includes a washhouse and a watering trough.
The Arco di Bacco: symbols and mystery
The upper section, the Arco di Bacco, is a stone arch structure adorned with coats of arms and carved symbols. Its keystone features a cross similar to the emblem of the Republic of Pisa, while inside the arch appears a Florentine lily, representing the influence of the cities of Pisa and Florence over the region in the Middle Ages.
According to local tradition, an inscription once engraved on the base of the fountain dated its construction to 1443, but more recent studies suggest it may actually date back to the 13th or 14th century.
Water and daily life
From the Arco di Bacco, water flowed through a channel to the lower level, supplying two arched niches built in 1863, as well as the trough and the public washhouse. These are covered by a wooden roof supported by brick pillars, offering shelter to the stone basins used by the townspeople for centuries.
The washhouse remained in use until after World War II, and in time was equipped with modern sinks beside the ancient stone basin.
A place of identity and symbolism
More than just a utilitarian structure, the Fonte di Bacco represents a symbol of local identity—a place deeply tied to the daily life, culture, and history of Bibbona. Its name evokes the Roman god Bacchus, alluding to grape and wine motifs carved into the stone, which highlight the area’s strong winemaking tradition.
Still today, strolling through this peaceful corner of Bibbona, one can feel the timeless charm of a place where water shaped the rhythms of village life, serving as a space of work, gathering, and legend. The Fonte di Bacco is a must-see stop for anyone wishing to discover Bibbona’s most authentic and symbolic heritage.
