Ruffo Castle

Also known as Ruffo Castle of Calabria, this fascinating fortification stands on a promontory at the mouth of the Strait of Messina, dominating both the coast and the city and is one of the most characteristic and typical elements of the landscape.
The castle, with an irregular plan, has parts that can be dated to different eras but that on the whole still retain the fairly homogeneous configuration of a fortress with curtains, towers and loopholes. Access to the fortress requires crossing a bridge. The main environment is characterized by a stone portal built with a pointed arch, on which stand the noble coat of arms of the Ruffo family and a plaque celebrating the restoration of the castle carried out in the 16th century.
Given its dominant position over the Strait of Messina, a lighthouse was built in 1913 to provide a reference for ships crossing the strait. The Scylla Lighthouse, a small white tower with a black base, is still active today and is operated by the Navy.
