Cannizzaro is a lively hamlet in the municipality of Aci Castello, located along the beautiful Ionian coast of Sicily, within the metropolitan city of Catania. This small coastal town retains a deep connection with its seafaring roots, although over time it has been transformed into a residential and tourist area that is much appreciated for its tranquility, beautiful coastline and quality of life.
The name Cannizzaro derives from the feud “Spolignetto,” acquired in the 18th century by the noble Cannizzaro family, which left an indelible imprint on the historical identity of the locality. The religious heart of the hamlet is the Parish of the Immaculate Conception, with the church located along Via Firenze, the main axis of the historic center. This is where the most heartfelt festivities are celebrated, such as the feast of the Immaculate Virgin Mary and the Feast of the Infant Jesus, which reinforce the sense of community and popular roots.
After World War II, Cannizzaro saw the emergence of a new residential and seaside area beyond State Highway 114, known as La Scogliera, now renowned for its equipped lidos and elegant hotels. This area is also home to the parish of Santa Maria Stella Maris, a landmark for residents and vacationers.
Cannizzaro is also known for its rich gastronomic tradition, heir to the seafaring and peasant culture of the area. Typical dishes include seasoned bread, grilled tuna and swordfish, sardines a beccafico, pasta with urchins, and the characteristic “mauro,” an edible seaweed with an intense sea flavor. There is no shortage of preserved anchovies (the “masculine”) in salt or oil, and the great classics of Sicilian cuisine such as arancini, caponata, parmigiana and pasta alla norma. For those with a sweet tooth, the village offers iconic desserts such as cannoli, cassate, granite and homemade ice cream.
