Farmhouse La Grotta dell’Eremita was created by recovering the original structures of an ancient village dating back to the 14th century and is the ideal place both for those who want to spend moments of pleasant tranquility and for those who are looking for strong emotions and experience the thrill of the Lucanian outdoors.
The La Grotta dell’Eremita is an organic farm, located at an altitude between 500-600 meters above sea level, and divided into four areas, each used for a fundamental activity: first the pastures, meadows and woods of beech and chestnut, where animals live in the wild, then the part dedicated to the cultivation of olive trees and cereals, and finally the area where the actual accommodation is located, the small ancient village, and finally a little higher up on the rocky ridge there is a cave dating back to the 9th-10th centuries, formerly inhabited by Basilian monks (the hermits), from which the Farm took its name. It spreads over 23 hectares of land, completely surrounded by woods and unspoiled nature, which makes it the perfect reference for mountain hiking.
Just 5 kilometers from the charming village of Castelmezzano and the spectacular Volo dell’Angelo (Flight of the Angel), nestled in the green of the Gallipoli Cognato – Piccole Dolomiti Lucane Regional Park, the Grotta dell’Eremita has 20 rooms, all spacious and bright, looking out the window and admiring stupendous landscapes.
They boast a rustic design and feature free Wi-Fi, LCD TVs and free tea and coffee. After a pleasant night’s sleep, you can enjoy a leisurely breakfast at the refreshment bar with typical farm products, freshly milked milk, ricotta cheese of the day, farm honey, homemade cakes and many other specialties.
At lunch and dinner, the chef brings to the table the best of local specialties produced only on the farm, from ravioli to various fresh pasta specialties, meats, wine, etc.
The perfect destination for anyone who wants to regenerate their bodies, establishing a new relationship with unspoiled nature and thus rediscover its flavors, smells and sensations. The farm products are all noteworthy and consist mainly of fresh and aged cheeses, fresh meats and sausages.
Upon request, it is possible to assist and actively participate in the farm’s agricultural processes: from the grape harvest to the cherry picking, from milking to the processes for transforming milk into the freshest cheeses.
At our farm you can buy all our products
Since the history of a people can also be read at the table through the dishes that reveal its gastronomic, historical and cultural roots, our food court offers a menu linked to the seasonality of products, so it is based on simple dishes that reflect our tradition and productions, all accompanied by the excellent wine of the area. Strong and sometimes delicate flavors with a rich choice, which belies the commonplace of “poor” cuisine. This is what the gastronomy of Basilicata offers, in which first courses, vegetables and lamb and pork meats dominate.
Our Educational Farm activity differs from the educational activity offered by the classic agritourism in that the activity of the latter is aimed only at guests who use the hospitality and catering services. Our Educational Farm, on the other hand, aims to promote, not only in the guests, but also in the whole community and in particular in children and young people, the culture of food seen in its complexity, that is, in that constant and always lively relationship with its own territory and local tradition. The service we intend to offer consists of projects and educational paths aimed at schools, citizens and any other potential interlocutor interested in learning about and touching the starting point of food production, the importance of the rural world, not only from the production aspect but also from the social aspect (i.e., as a garrison and defense of the territory from natural phenomena, such as erosion), the environment, its balances, ecosystems and the concept of agricultural and environmental eco-sustainability. The course is developed in four thematic areas of agricultural interest, and bridging these will be the forest environment. The child or adult who will take this path with us will walk both physically and evolutionarily within the farm, discovering the history of the farming world and its evolution, of how production needs and processes have changed, and with them the land.
