The Monaldeschi Castle, also known as Palazzo Monaldeschi della Cervara or Palazzo Madama, is one of the most important historical monuments in the village of Onano, in the province of Viterbo. This imposing building represents the austere and elegant style of 15th-century communal palaces.
It was erected around the first half of the 15th century by the Monaldeschi della Cervara, a noble family that had ancient and prestigious origins. The castle was built to defend against raids by foreign invaders and also to demonstrate the family’s economic and political power. Over the centuries it underwent numerous restorations and extensions until it became the marvelous architectural work we know today.
Today the Onano Castle is owned by the Municipality of Onano and is the municipal seat.
