Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Snow

What to see in Rocca Priora, Roma, Lazio

the Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Snow, in Rocca Priora, in the XVI century was only a small chapel where he lived a hermit and the abitenti del borgo there prayed the Virgin, to ensure each year abundant snowfalls. One of the trade of the snow was in fact the greater economic activity of Rocca Priora, which had its major development in the seventeenth century and lasted until the middle of the Nineteenth Century, i.e. until they were invented the first rudimentary refrigerators (then called "iceboxes"). The snow was collected and conserved in wells covered by the hay, used as enormous thermal tanks; was brought with carts to Rome and sold to wealthy families.

Since 1860 the Shrine is ruled by the Pallottines Fathers. The church is open to the public and can be visited.
