The acronym of the future is FTTH – Fiber To The Home – which, translated, means “fiber to the home”. A scenario that provides ultra broadband fiber optic bandwidth from the power plant to the customer’s home for the entire route and with maximum performance: the speed, in fact, is up to one gigabit per second.
In addition to the big cities, Open Fiber is bringing ultra broadband to where no private telecom operator has said it wants to invest. Open Fiber’s plan was born precisely to bridge the gap between the connected areas and those that are more difficult to reach. The network that will connect the villages will be built with FTTH and FWA technology – Fixed Wireless Access – through participation in public tenders managed by Infratel, which will retain ownership of the network, entrusting it to Open Fiber for 20 years. Greater efficiency and reliability together with high performance are the key words of Open Fiber, which will cable over 7,000 municipalities throughout the country.
More and more connected
There are countless advantages that Open Fiber brings to Italian tourism, especially to villages, which thanks to this fiber connection will finally be competitive in all areas. Here are three examples among the villages that have chosen Open Fiber: Arquà Petrarca, Anghiari and Floresta, nestled respectively in the north, center and south of Italy.
Arquà Petrarca
Arquà Petrarca – in the province of Padua – is a medieval jewel village on the slopes of Monte Piccolo and Monte Ventolone, in the scenery of the Euganean Hills. Among the municipal buildings that Open Fiber will connect to the ultra-broadband, in addition to the town hall and kindergarten and elementary schools, there are also Petrarca’s house – the poet’s house museum – and the Musical Foundation Masiero and Centamin. By the month of May 2019, a new 19 km infrastructure will be built in Arquà Petrarca that will cable about 1,200 units.
Anghiari
In the centre of Italy is Anghiari, in the province of Arezzo and in the Tuscan Valtiberina. It is one of the most beautiful villages in Italy, with a strong tourist vocation due to its perfectly preserved medieval centre. Its name is linked to the famous battle of Anghiari, painted by Leonardo Da Vinci, and to the tradition of antique furniture restoration. It is planned to lay 64 kilometers of Open Fiber and among the 3,317 units to be wired, are the municipal headquarters, primary schools and sites of historical and administrative interest.
Floresta
Among the gems of southern Italy is Floresta, in the province of Messina, the highest village in Sicilia thanks to its 1,275 meters of altitude, a microcosm of art and history, with only 450 inhabitants in the heart of the Nebrodi Park. In Floresta the Open Fiber network, proportionate to the size of the village, has already been completed and has reached 141 units. An example-guide, the village of Floresta, today a bastion of connectivity and future, once covered by a thick forest, from which the Romans drew for the construction of their ships. Today, with Open Fiber, tomorrow is built.
