Palio della Rivalsa in Bettolle

The Palio della Rivalsa di Bettolle is a festival that takes place every year in the community of Bettolle, part of the municipality of Sinalunga, on the third Sunday in June. This event is organized by the Pro Loco di Bettolle and is based on the re-enactment of a historical episode from the 16th century, when Ascanio della Cornia, lord of Castiglion del Lago, distinguished himself in a military action against the fortress of Bettolle.

The Palio is a competition between five districts of Bettolle: Montemaggiore, La Ceppa, Il Casato, Il Poggio, and Le Caselle. Each district is represented by a pair of stretcher bearers, who are tasked with carrying a wooden amphora on a stretcher, running along a route that winds twice through the historic center of the town. The amphora is positioned in such a way as to maintain a precarious balance, adding an extra level of difficulty to the race.

The race is a mix of physical skill, dexterity, and coordination, as the barellieri have to navigate the tight corners and obstacles typical of medieval town centers while trying not to drop the amphora. The enthusiasm of the participants and spectators is palpable, as each district passionately and fervently supports its pair of runners, hoping to win the title.

The Palio della Rivalsa is not just a race, but also an immersion in local history, a way to experience traditions and strengthen the sense of community within the village. It is an event rich in color, music, and traditions that involves residents and visitors in a celebration of ancient memory that is celebrated with joy and fair competition.
