Palio dei Rioni in Castiglion Fiorentino

The Palio dei Rioni in Castiglion Fiorentino is a traditional and eagerly awaited event held every year on the third Sunday in June. The day begins with Holy Mass at the Church of the Madonna delle Grazie del Rivaio, followed by the blessing of the horses and jockeys by the priest.

In the afternoon, there is a spectacular historical parade, with participants from the different districts dressed in medieval and Renaissance costumes, accompanied by musicians and flag throwers. The parade winds its way through the streets of the historic center until it reaches Piazzale Garibaldi, where the Palio race takes place.

The highlight of the event takes place at 6.45 p.m., when a firecracker is set off to announce the approach of the Palio. At 7 p.m., all the participating horses must be ready on the track at the command of the Mossiere. The moment of the race is full of excitement and suspense, with waiting times that can be very long, but which increase the atmosphere of competition and adrenaline.
