The Festival of the Middle Ages is one of Italy’s most fascinating cultural events and takes place every year in Gubbio, a wonderful Umbrian town suspended in time. Conceived by journalist Federico Fioravanti and organized in collaboration with the municipality, the festival is more than just a re-enactment: it is an exciting journey through the centuries, a lens pointed at the past to better understand the present.
In its 11th edition, to be held in the last week of September, the theme will be “The Journey. Pilgrims, Wayfarers, Explorers.” An opportunity to dispel clichés about the Middle Ages as a static era, and instead discover centuries of intense movement: epic migrations, spiritual pilgrimages, trade by land and sea, encounters between different cultures.
For five days, historians, writers, scientists, journalists and enthusiasts will animate public lectures, dialogues and round tables, in the evocative Centro Santo Spirito. Framing the entire festival is the historic center of Gubbio: Piazza Grande, Palazzo dei Consoli, the monastery of San Francesco, the Ducal Palace and many other symbolic places become the stage for a lively and engaging event.
The Medieval Festival is a meeting point between academic knowledge and popular passion, where past and present dialogue between culture, entertainment and active participation. It is a unique opportunity to experience Gubbio as never before, and to immerse oneself in an era that, distant in time, continues to speak to us with a surprisingly current voice.
If you are planning a weekend in Gubbio for the Medieval Festival, consider the Dimora Morelli B&B: comfortable rooms, a well-kept atmosphere and a great base for experiencing the events in town.
