Marriage of the Sea 2025
From May 30 to June 1, 2025, Cervia celebrates one of its most fascinating and ancient traditions: the Marriage of the Sea, a historical re-enactment that combines sacredness, folklore and spectacle in a rite that has been handed down for 581 years.
The event originates from an episode in 1445, when the Bishop of Cervia, Pietro Barbo (future Pope Paul II), to calm a storm threw his ring into the sea, thus saving the crew. Every year since then, Cervia reenacts this symbolic gesture with a solemn and spectacular ceremony.
The Rite of the Ring, the central moment of the event, takes place on Sunday, June 1, preceded by a series of events that enliven the historic center and the canal port: exhibitions, concerts, historical processions, games on the water and re-enactments that involve citizens, tourists and history enthusiasts.
Among the novelties of 2025, the host city Pinzolo-Madonna di Campiglio will actively participate in the cultural exchange and ceremony, while Ilary Fontana and Serio Goffi – athletes of the Cerviaman group – will take on the roles of the Lady of the Ring and the Podesta, leading the historical procession.
How to participate in the ceremony at sea
Per experience the most evocative moment-the ring toss-you will be able to:
– Follow the live coverage on big screens in Garibaldi Square and on the D’Annunzio Promenade;
– Board the motorboats from the Canal Port (Cervia side) from 5 to 5:30 p.m., with scheduled departure at 6 p.m.
