Renaissance Days

Every first weekend in September, Scarperia is transformed into a fascinating village of the past during the Renaissance Days, a historical reenactment involving more than 800 figures including ladies, knights, artisans and commoners, offering an immersive, living experience of the Tuscan Renaissance.

Born out of in-depth studies of historical sources, costumes and customs of the time, the Days bring to light ancient trades that have now almost disappeared: strawmakers, basketmakers, blacksmiths, carpenters, waxmakers, papermakers, cutlers – excellence still alive in Scarperia – as well as questing friars, laundresses, shopkeepers, storytellers, fortune-tellers and even brothels and witches.

For two days, the village streets are filled with the scents, sounds and colors of yesteryear. People stroll among craft markets, musicians, jesters and fire-eaters, while vicariate guards watch over the safety of the new vicar. Visitors can buy and sell goods only with the “florin of Scarperia,” the event’s special currency, which can be converted at the “gabellieri” cash registers.

There is no shortage of good food: at the “Locanda del Vicariato” one can enjoy typical Renaissance dishes in a convivial atmosphere true to tradition.

Shows, historical games, flag-wavers, heralds and theatrical performances enrich the experience, culminating in a festive atmosphere that anticipates the solemn Diotto of Sept. 8, the heart of Scarperia’s history.

An unmissable event to experience the magic of the Renaissance within the historic walls of one of Tuscany’s most fascinating villages.
