Its walls, visible from most parts of the village, tell a story of battles, sieges, transformations and rebirths spanning over a thousand years of history.

The origins of the fortification probably date back to between the 5th and 6th centuries, when the Lombards built an initial defensive structure in a strategic position to control the communication routes between Umbria and Tuscany. In the following centuries, the fortress was expanded and reinforced by the Marquises of Tuscany, who built the imposing quadrangular walls still visible today, and subsequently by the Perugians, who transformed it into an important military outpost to defend the territory.

During the Middle Ages, the castle was at the centre of disputes between the leading noble families of central Italy and the powers vying for control of the region. Sackings, sieges and wars altered its appearance on several occasions, culminating in the destruction that took place between the Renaissance and the modern era. Further damage was caused by the bombing during the Second World War, when Passignano was a strategic target due to the presence of military facilities linked to the air force.

Despite the events that have shaped its history, the Fortress still retains an extraordinary charm today. Strolling amongst the ancient walls, one can admire the distinctive keep, the striking triangular tower and the remains of the fortifications that protected the village for centuries. The narrow streets winding within the ancient walls also allow you to imagine the layout of the medieval castle and the daily life of its inhabitants.

Following a major restoration project, the Fortresswas reopened to the public in 2008 and is now one of the most visited attractions in Passignano sul Trasimeno. The climb to the main tower, some 32 metres high, offers one of the most spectacular views of the lake: from up here, the vista takes in the waters of Lake Trasimeno, its islands and the rolling Umbrian hills stretching to the horizon.

Inside the fortress is also the Boat Museum, a small but valuable museum dedicated to the tradition of lake navigation. Here are preserved ancient boats used on Lake Trasimeno, fishing equipment and extremely rare examples of medieval dugout canoes, carved from a single tree trunk and discovered right in the waters of the lake.

Visiting the Passignano Fortress means immersing yourself in the history of Lake Trasimeno, discovering the events that have shaped this area and enjoying one of Umbria’s most picturesque viewpoints.

Discover the Passignano Fortress, an ancient medieval fortress overlooking the lake, home to the Boat Museum and boasting one of Umbria’s most beautiful views.

[165204
76222,76221
101776
post-385416","what-to-see","type-what-to-see","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","village-conntection-passignano-sul-trasimeno","what-to-see-region-and-provinces-perugia-en","what-to-see-region-and-provinces-umbria-en","what-to-see-category-castle-rocca-fortress
["GET
