Located in the hamlet of Catona, this place of worship is a deeply evocative spiritual destination, where faith and landscape merge to create an intense and immersive experience.

The sanctuary has for centuries been a focal point for Carmelite devotion and for pilgrims who, traversing paths and woods, reach the summit to pay homage to the Madonna del Carmine. The earliest historical records date back to a pastoral visit in 1735, which documents the presence of a cult already deeply rooted among the local population.

Inside the building stands a precious 18th-century stucco altar, brought to light thanks to recent restoration work, alongside the statue of the Madonna, the focal point of veneration. The atmosphere is intimate and evocative, enhanced by the secluded location and the beauty of the surrounding landscape, which stretches across the Alento river plain and the Cilento hills.

The Sanctuary of the Madonna del Carmine is one of the so-called “Seven Sisters”, a group of Marian shrines scattered across the Cilento mountains and symbolically regarded as guardians of the valleys below. These include the Sanctuary of the Madonna di Novi Velia, the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Granato, the Madonna della Stella, the Madonna della Civitella, the Madonna di Pietrasanta and the Madonna della Neve on Mount Cervati.

Visiting this sanctuary means embarking on a journey that combines spirituality, history and nature. It is a place that conveys peace and contemplation, where the silence of the mountains accompanies the pilgrim on an authentic experience, suspended between heaven and earth.

Ph.
