Also known as the Torre al Capo di Ascea, it stands as one of the most striking examples of the Kingdom of Naples’ coastal defence system, designed to protect the territory from pirate raids.

The tower’s origins date back to the 13th century, but the current structure is the result of reconstruction work begun in 1567 at the instigation of Viceroy Don Perafan de Ribera, as part of an ambitious defensive project launched in 1563. The aim was to create a network of watchtowers along the coast to counter the raids of Turkish pirates, including the feared fleets led by the famous Khayr al-Din Barbarossa.

Square in shape and built in a strategic position, the tower owes its name to the optical communication systems used in the past: smoke signals and fires allowed the tower keeper to quickly transmit information to neighbouring towers, warning the population of any dangers approaching from the sea.

The charm of the Telegraph Tower is enhanced by the natural setting that surrounds it. Behind it lie wild, unspoilt coves, accessible only by sea, such as the picturesque Baia d’Argento and Baia della Rondinella, home to the charming Grotta della Madonnina. Continuing along the coast, you reach Fiumicello Beach, where the stream of the same name meets the sea, marking the boundary between Ascea and Pisciotta.

The names of these bays, now evocative and full of charm, were given by Gennaro Greco, a leading figure in the promotion of the local area.

Visiting the Torre del Telegrafo means immersing oneself in a landscape where history, nature and memory blend in perfect harmony: a place suspended between sea and sky, capable of recounting centuries of defence, sightings and life along the Cilento coast.

Ph.
