Between the 12th and 13th centuries, the structure was reduced by one nave, probably due to a fire. The first documented reference dates back to April 19, 1202, in the charter of Civezzano, which attests to the importance of the parish church as early as the Middle Ages.

The miraculous Madonna and the Renaissance reconstruction

At the beginning of the 16th century, the church became a center of great devotion thanks to a miraculous image of the Madonna, which attracted pilgrims from all over the bishopric of Trento. However, the ancient building, now in poor condition, was no longer adequate to support such a large influx of worshippers. It was therefore Prince Bishop Bernardo Clesio who promoted a complete reconstruction of the temple.

Construction began around 1530 (according to some scholars as early as 1522) and was completed in 1537, as commemorated by a stained glass window in the apse. Master builders from Como, who were also active in other important construction projects in Trentino, worked on the new church. In the following years, the building was decorated, paved, and enriched with highly prized pictorial cycles.

Entirely financed by donations from the diocese, Santa Maria Assunta was considered one of the most beautiful churches in Trentino. It was described enthusiastically by scholars and travelers and, during the Council of Trent, was visited by numerous high-ranking prelates, confirming its artistic and religious prestige.

Historical events and restoration work

Over the centuries, the church underwent numerous renovations: from the reconstruction of the roof between the 17th and 18th centuries, to the addition of side altars in 1771, to the 19th-century decorations and the creation of the churchyard in 1880. During World War I, copper and bells were requisitioned; in 1923, the building was officially elevated to the title of archpriest by Bishop Celestino Endrici.

Major restoration work in the 20th and 21st centuries has made it possible to recover the 16th-century frescoes in the presbytery and those attributed to Marcello Fogolino, now located on the counter-façade. The last conservation work dates back to 2006.

External architecture

The church, facing east and overlooking the town’s main square, is an imposing red limestone building. The gabled façade, completely clad in stone, is dominated by the refined Renaissance portal commissioned by Clesio, rich in sculptures, imperial medallions, and cardinal symbols, surmounted by a rose window and a triangular pediment.

The sides are marked by pilasters and large Gothic single-lancet windows that illuminate the interior, while on the left side are the sacristy and the tall quadrangular bell tower, topped by an octagonal spire with a sphere and cross.

Interior and works of art

The interior has a single nave divided into four bays by semi-pillars, with an elegant lunette vault and a diagonal red and white stone floor. The raised presbytery, ending in a polygonal apse, preserves an extraordinary cycle of 16th-century frescoes dedicated to the life of Mary.

Of great importance is the choir loft with the Bonatti organ (1708), housed in a 17th-century wooden case and still one of the most important historical instruments in the diocese. The church also houses precious altarpieces by Jacopo and Francesco Bassano, 19th-century paintings of the Way of the Cross, and ancient stained glass windows, among the oldest in Trentino.

A heritage of faith and art

The Archpriest Church of Santa Maria Assunta is not only the religious heart of Civezzano, but also a veritable treasure trove of art and memory, bearing witness to over fifteen centuries of history, popular devotion, and great Renaissance architecture in Trentino.

Discover the Church of Santa Maria Assunta in Civezzano: a thousand years of history, Renaissance art, 16th-century frescoes, and the famous Bonatti organ.

[50607
76207,76209
30159
post-370735","what-to-see","type-what-to-see","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","village-conntection-civezzano-it","what-to-see-region-and-provinces-trentino-south-tyrol","what-to-see-region-and-provinces-trento-en","what-to-see-category-place-of-cult
["GET
