Its keystone features a cross similar to the emblem of the Republic of Pisa, while inside the arch appears a Florentine lily, representing the influence of the cities of Pisa and Florence over the region in the Middle Ages.

According to local tradition, an inscription once engraved on the base of the fountain dated its construction to 1443, but more recent studies suggest it may actually date back to the 13th or 14th century.

Water and daily life

From the Arco di Bacco, water flowed through a channel to the lower level, supplying two arched niches built in 1863, as well as the trough and the public washhouse.
