Built between 1594 and 1605, it was conceived as an integral part of the urban development project commissioned by Cosimo I de’ Medici, who envisioned Terra del Sole as an ideal city, a symbol of order and rationality.

The church is in fact situated in a strategic position, opposite the Palazzo dei Commissari, emphasising the balance between religious and civil power. The commission for its construction was entrusted to Mastro Raffaello di Zenobi di Pagno da Fiesole, who probably reworked the original designs by Baldassarre Lanci. The building was consecrated in 1609.

Architecturally, it features a Latin cross plan of great grandeur. The Renaissance-style façade is punctuated by pilasters and divided into two orders by a string course decorated with metopes and triglyphs; at the centre is the portal with a lunette, whilst the upper part is dominated by an oval window, flanked by elegant volutes and surmounted by a triangular pediment.

The interior, simple yet elegant, features a single nave with a wooden truss roof. The walls are punctuated by Ionic pilasters and arches that house side altars and chapels. The chancel ends in a pentagonal apse, whilst the bell tower, completed between 1821 and 1825, rises up alongside it; beneath its arches lies the striking baptistery.

The church houses numerous valuable works of art: among these are the 16th-century carved walnut choir, the wooden Crucifix of the Florentine school (16th century), the carved Easter candelabrum, and the organ built in 1734 by Feliciano Fedeli. Also of great importance are the altarpieces, such as the Madonna del Carmine with Saints Reparata and Catherine by Pier Paolo Menzocchi (1575) and the Madonna del Rosario with Saints Dominic and Catherine of Siena by Francesco Longhi (1610), as well as a Crucifixion from the Romagna school.

Built to replace an older parish church dedicated to Saint Reparata, documented as early as 970, the church is today one of the most significant examples of Renaissance architecture in Romagna, perfectly integrated into the urban layout of the Medici fortress town.

Discover the Church of Santa Reparata in Terra del Sole, an imposing Renaissance building housing works of art and the heart of the Medici town.

[50563
76133,76136
30159
post-311592","what-to-see","type-what-to-see","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","village-conntection-castrocaro-terme-it","what-to-see-region-and-provinces-emilia-romagna-en","what-to-see-region-and-provinces-forli-cesena-en","what-to-see-category-place-of-cult
["GET
