The stratigraphic section is particularly significant: here, arranged in chronological order from the most recent to the oldest layers, are artefacts from around fifty burials dating from the 4th to the 2nd century BC. These grave goods offer valuable insight into the material culture and trade relations of the ancient settlement, constituting the oldest evidence of human presence in Polizzi Generosa.

Among the most important finds is an extraordinary Proto-Sicyonian amphora attributed to the so-called ‘Painter of Polizzi’, dating from the first half of the 4th century BC. The main side depicts the famous struggle between Heracles and the Nemean lion, rendered with great narrative vigour, whilst the other side features a scene of personal grooming. This artefact plays a fundamental role in the study of the relationship between Attic productions and the earliest local forms of figurative pottery.

A particularly poignant aspect of the exhibition concerns the grave goods of children and infants, buried according to the rite of inhumation. For adolescents and adults, however, the practice of cremation was more widespread, sometimes accompanied, in the earliest periods, by burial. These ritual differences provide a significant insight into the funeral customs of the time.

Today, the museum stands as a cultural landmark for the village, capable of recounting, through its artefacts, an ancient history woven from exchanges, traditions and identity.

Opening hours:
Tuesday to Sunday: 10.00 am – 1.00 pm
Afternoon opening (April – September): Saturday and Sunday 3.00 pm – 6.30 pm
Closed on Mondays
First Sunday of the month: free admission

Discover the Archaeological Museum of Polizzi Generosa: an ancient necropolis, an amphora depicting Heracles, and artefacts that tell the story of the village’s origins.

[50951
76203,76196
28444
post-311550","what-to-see","type-what-to-see","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","village-conntection-polizzi-generosa-it","what-to-see-region-and-provinces-palermo-en","what-to-see-region-and-provinces-sicily","what-to-see-category-museum
["GET
