Situated in the heart of the historic centre, this monumental fountain, carved from lava stone, tells the story of over four centuries of history, having become over time one of the most iconic sites of the local community.

Built in the 16th century entirely from lava stone, the fountain is striking for its grandeur and the refinement of its decorations. The work was constructed by the master sculptor from Buccheri known as ‘Mastro Zocco’, who left his signature on the structure, still visible today, as if wishing to pass on the pride of his work through the centuries. The fountain was inaugurated in 1585 and has continued to fulfil its original function ever since, supplying the village with water from its springs.

The most distinctive feature of the structure is the four masks carved from lava stone, from which the water gushes, creating a striking interplay of sounds and reflections. These decorative details are a splendid example of the skill of the Sicilian stonemasons of the time, who were able to transform hard volcanic stone into works of great elegance.

Over the centuries, the Fountain of the Four Canals has become a true landmark in the daily life of Buccheri. Stories, encounters and folk traditions have woven themselves around it, making it not only a functional structure but also a symbol of the village’s identity.

Today, the fountain is recognised as one of the town’s most important historical monuments and is a major attraction for visitors to Buccheri and the Iblei Mountains. Its presence, unchanged over time, continues to recount the village’s history and the deep connection between art, water and community life in inland Sicily.

Discover the Fountain of the Four Canals in Buccheri, a historic 16th-century fountain carved from lava stone, featuring elegant masks that symbolise this Sicilian village.

[50473
76196,76205
28438
post-311318","what-to-see","type-what-to-see","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","village-conntection-buccheri-it","what-to-see-region-and-provinces-sicily","what-to-see-region-and-provinces-syracuse","what-to-see-category-attraction-monument
["GET
