Situated in the municipality of Palena at an altitude of 1,272 metres, the sanctuary preserves the memory of the hermitic life of Pietro da Morrone, the future Pope Celestine V.

According to tradition, the young Pietro Angelerio arrived in Palena in 1231, when he was just over twenty years old. After leaving monastic life, he set out for Rome, but a violent snowstorm forced him to stop in the mountains of Abruzzo. Drawn by the spirituality and silence of the Majella, he found refuge in a small cave carved into the rock, where he spent almost three years in prayer and contemplation.

It was precisely to preserve the memory of this mystical experience that, in the 14th century, the Celestine monks built the monastic complex of the Madonna dell’Altare around the hermit’s ancient refuge. Over the centuries, the sanctuary became an important centre of popular devotion for the local communities.

The hermitage remained in the hands of the Celestine monks until 1807, when the order was suppressed following the Napoleonic edicts. The complex subsequently passed to the baronial Perticone family, who converted it into a summer residence, whilst continuing the tradition of welcoming pilgrims, particularly during the festival dedicated to the Virgin Mary.

In 1970, the sanctuary was donated to the Municipality of Palena so that its historical, cultural and spiritual value might become the collective heritage of the community. Despite the damage caused by the 1984 earthquake, the complex has been restored and today once again stands in all its charm.

Visiting the Hermitage of the Madonna dell’Altare means immersing oneself in a place suspended in time, surrounded by the woods and the silence of the Abruzzo mountains. Here, spirituality, nature and history blend into a unique atmosphere, making this sanctuary one of the most fascinating destinations in the Maiella.

Discover the Celestine Hermitage of the Madonna dell’Altare in Palena, a mystical site in the Maiella linked to Pietro da Morrone, the future Pope Celestine V.

[50906
76400,76401
30159
post-311152","what-to-see","type-what-to-see","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","village-conntection-palena-it","what-to-see-region-and-provinces-abruzzo-en","what-to-see-region-and-provinces-chieti-en","what-to-see-category-place-of-cult
["GET
