Overlooking the Piombino Canal, this elegant, monumental lighthouse combines maritime charm, defensive history and neo-Gothic architecture in one of the most panoramic settings on the Tuscan coast.<\/p>\n<p>The structure appears as a slender, stone-clad square tower, characterised by refined neo-Gothic architectural elements. The entrance, preceded by a few steps, is surmounted by a pointed arch reminiscent of medieval aesthetics, whilst the upper section features a crown decorated with small pointed arches supporting the top battlements. Above the terrace stands the metal lantern that still illuminates the coastal stretch of the Piombino promontory today.<\/p>\n<p>The lighthouse was built on the site of the ancient Rocchetta di Piombino, a historic defensive fortification demolished in the 1920s to make way for the current square opening out towards the sea. The tower was erected at the southern bastion of the fortress and quickly became an important navigational landmark in the stretch of sea near the Old Port of Piombino.<\/p>\n<p>Since the second half of the 20th century, the Rocchetta Lighthouse has remained the city\u2019s only monumental lighthouse still in operation, following the decommissioning of the old maritime signal station. Even today, it remains an iconic feature of the city skyline and one of the most photographed spots in Piombino.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to its privileged position, the lighthouse offers spectacular views of the Tyrrhenian Sea, the Island of Elba and the coasts of the Tuscan Archipelago.
