This space, still perfectly preserved in the crypt today, represents the spiritual heart of the building and an important place of worship.

At the end of the 16th century, the church was renovated at the behest of Silvio Filonardi, nephew of Cardinal Ennio, thus maintaining a strong link with one of the most influential families in the area. As a testament to this relationship, the nearby Palazzo Filonardi is directly connected to the church via an internal staircase.

The building houses works of extraordinary historical and artistic value, saved in 1609 from the destruction of the ancient Basilica of St Peter in the Vatican, ordered by Pope Paul V. It was Monsignor Giovanni Battista Simoncelli, secretary to the Pope and a native of Boville Ernica, who transferred several precious artefacts to the village, including a mosaic attributed to Giotto.

This mosaic, created in a circular format measuring approximately 70 centimetres, depicts an angel in half-length portrait and is considered the only intact mosaic by the great master to have survived to the present day. Thanks again to Simoncelli, a porphyry cross inlaid on marble also found its way into the church; according to tradition, this was kissed by Dante Alighieri during the Jubilee of 1300.

The church also houses an early Christian sarcophagus, discovered in 1941 during works in the surrounding countryside, further enriching the historical and religious heritage of this evocative place.

Discover the Church of San Pietro Ispano in Boville Ernica, built over a sacred grotto and home to unique works such as the mosaic attributed to Giotto and ancient early Christian artefacts.

[50469
76149,76148
30159
post-311009","what-to-see","type-what-to-see","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","village-conntection-boville-ernica-it","what-to-see-region-and-provinces-frosinone-en","what-to-see-region-and-provinces-lazio-en","what-to-see-category-place-of-cult
["GET
