The earliest documented references date back to 1296, when papal bulls concerning the lands of the Val di Lago were issued within its walls.

Over the centuries, the church has undergone numerous alterations: enlarged in the 15th century and consecrated in 1447, it was declared ‘distinguished’ by Pope Paul III in 1535. A devastating fire in the 17th century severely compromised its structure, necessitating a major reconstruction commissioned by Bishop Domenico Massini. The building was then renovated in its current Baroque style and consecrated in 1705 by Cardinal Marco Antonio Barbarigo. Further restoration work followed in the subsequent centuries, up to the post-war period.

The façade is simple and elegant, featuring a central portal flanked by columns and an arched pediment, two side entrances and the adjacent bell tower. The interior is divided into three naves separated by pillars in faux veined marble; the central nave, covered by a barrel vault, leads to the apse, which was decorated in the 18th century by Francesco Alippi and Luca Rubini.

On the high altar stands the statue of the patron saint, created by Pietro Ferraroni of Cremona, flanked by the figures of the co-patrons Saint Michael the Archangel and Saint Victor. Also of great interest are the wooden pulpit by Matteo Siler and the marble baptismal font in the shape of a hexagonal well, attributed to the school of Isaia da Pisa.

The side aisles house six altars dedicated, amongst others, to Purgatory, St Francis, Our Lady of the Rosary, St Andrew, St Charles and the Crucifix, linked to the ancient local confraternities.

The complex also houses a small museum of sacred art, which preserves liturgical vestments, sculptures, votive offerings and objects of great historical value, including a set of vestments donated by Cardinal Domenico Ferrata.

As a whole, the church bears witness to centuries of faith, art and community life, and continues to play a central role in the religious tradition of Gradoli to this day.

Discover the Church of Santa Maria Maddalena in Gradoli, a Baroque building with three naves, featuring sacred artworks and a historical museum in the heart of the village.

[50732
76148,76153
30159
post-310993","what-to-see","type-what-to-see","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","village-conntection-gradoli-it","what-to-see-region-and-provinces-lazio-en","what-to-see-region-and-provinces-viterbo-en","what-to-see-category-place-of-cult
["GET
