Its origins date back to medieval times: documents from the 12th century mention it as the “tower of Fornace,” and in the 13th century it was part of the upper Valsugana line of fortifications.

Since the 11th century it was the seat of the powerful Trentino Roccabruna family, whose progenitor was Gandolfino di Fornace. In 1424, the prince-bishop of Trent entrusted its ownership to Cristoforo and Antonio di Roccabruna. However, it was Giacomo di Roccabruna, in 1462, who started the work of transforming the ancient fortress into a real castle. These interventions were completed in 1566 by his descendants, who gave the building the elegant Renaissance appearance still partly visible today.

Later, the castle changed hands to the Gaudenti nobles and then to the Giovanelli counts, who in 1853 gave it to the Fornace municipality. Part of the structure was demolished to make room for the new parish church of San Martino, but the southeastern wing and the ancient tower were preserved. Today we can still admire striking elements of the original Renaissance architecture: ashlar-framed windows, an emblazoned portal, and an inner courtyard with a loggia.

Today the castle is home to the Fornace Town Hall and houses, on the second floor, a small historical exhibition with information panels and archaeological finds, freely accessible during office hours. More in-depth guided tours are possible by reservation by contacting the municipal administration.

A short walk from the castle is Palazzo Salvadori, another jewel of local heritage. Its aristocratic hall, frescoed in 1844 in the Venetian style, preserves fine decorations with musical instruments, heraldic coats of arms, and a valuable painting depicting St. Mark’s Square in Venice. The palace can be visited during the opening of the municipal library.

Roccabruna Castle thus represents not only a valuable example of Renaissance architecture in Trentino, but also a symbol of the historical memory and civic life of the village of Fornace.

Discover the Roccabruna Castle in Fornace, an ancient Renaissance mansion in the heart of Trentino, now home to the Town Hall and open to visitors with a historical exhibition and archaeological finds.

[50682
76207,76209
101776
post-310805","what-to-see","type-what-to-see","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","village-conntection-fornace-it","what-to-see-region-and-provinces-trentino-south-tyrol","what-to-see-region-and-provinces-trento-en","what-to-see-category-castle-rocca-fortress
["GET
