Its presence helps to define the elegant urban layout of the Renaissance town commissioned by Vespasiano Gonzaga.<\/p>\n<p>Originally, the column stood in a different location: until 1932, it was situated at the junction of the ancient Via Giulia and the present-day Via Vespasiano Gonzaga, one of the town\u2019s main thoroughfares. It was erected in 1583 along this route and was only moved to its current, more central and picturesque location later, at the beginning of the 20th century.<\/p>\n<p>From an architectural point of view, the column is characterised by an elegant fluted shaft in Botticino marble, complemented by a bronze base and capital created by the goldsmith Andrea Cavalli.
