{"id":310501,"date":"2024-08-09T22:10:00","date_gmt":"2024-08-09T20:10:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.e-borghi.com\/what-to-see\/the-synagogue-of-the-jewish-community-of-sabbioneta-2\/"},"modified":"2024-09-15T23:54:12","modified_gmt":"2024-09-15T21:54:12","slug":"the-synagogue-of-the-jewish-community-of-sabbioneta","status":"publish","type":"what-to-see","link":"https:\/\/www.e-borghi.com\/en\/what-to-see\/the-synagogue-of-the-jewish-community-of-sabbioneta\/","title":{"rendered":"The Synagogue of the Jewish community of Sabbioneta"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This lovely little synagogue was built in 1824 to a design by Carlo Visioli on the site of a much older synagogue there from the XVII century on the second floor of the Jewish quarter, next to the Church of St. Roche.<br \/>The presence of a Jewish community in Sabbioneta dates from 1436 when Gianfrancesco Gonzaga authorized the Jewish brothers Bonaiuto and Bonaventura from Pisa to live in Sabbioneta and run a pawnbroker\u2019s shop. <br \/>A generously dimensioned rectangular foyer leads into the synagogue. <br \/>The Ark (Ar\u00f2n Hakodesh) where the Scrolls of the Law were stored, is at the rear of the room directly in front of the entryway. <br \/>It is set into the wall and framed by two Corinthian columns surmounted by a tympanum. <br \/>The women\u2019s gallery is above the entrance and shielded from the hall side by a wooden grating. <br \/>The left side windows overlook an internal courtyard while those on the right, overlooking the street are dummy. <br \/>The domical vault, enriched with plasterwork by Pietro Bolla from Switzerland, is supported by a series of wall pilasters and four Corinthian capital columns. <br \/>The furnishings that remain are splendid and precious. <br \/>Apart from the gilded and decorated doors of the Ark, there are the oil lamps hanging by the sides of the Ark, a wrought iron gate (certainly older than the synagogue itself ) and the wooden pedestal (Bim\u00e0h) used as the reading stand. <br \/>The benches are 19th century. <br \/>The Holy Ark of the old synagogue (a four door wooden cupboard with two pilasters surmounted by Corinthian half-capitals framing the top doors) was taken to Jerusalem in1970 to be used to store the &#8220;Sifr\u00e8 Torah&#8221; in the Judge&#8217;s Hall of the Upper Rabinical Court.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Synagogue of Sabbioneta is a temple of rare architectural beauty built in 1824.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"featured_media":237469,"template":"","village-conntection":[51012],"what-to-see-region-and-provinces":[76159,76166],"what-to-see-category":[30159],"class_list":["post-310501","what-to-see","type-what-to-see","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","village-conntection-sabbioneta-it","what-to-see-region-and-provinces-lombardia-en","what-to-see-region-and-provinces-mantua","what-to-see-category-place-of-cult"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.e-borghi.com\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/what-to-see\/310501","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.e-borghi.com\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/what-to-see"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.e-borghi.com\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/what-to-see"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.e-borghi.com\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/what-to-see\/310501\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.e-borghi.com\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/237469"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.e-borghi.com\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=310501"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"village-conntection","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.e-borghi.com\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/village-conntection?post=310501"},{"taxonomy":"what-to-see-region-and-provinces","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.e-borghi.com\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/what-to-see-region-and-provinces?post=310501"},{"taxonomy":"what-to-see-category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.e-borghi.com\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/what-to-see-category?post=310501"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
