This ancient settlement consists of picturesque terraced houses enclosed within defensive walls, bearing witness to the strategic layout of the village in medieval times.

At the heart of the complex stands the Tower of Pedenale, dating back to the 12th century, the sole surviving element of an ancient castle built by the powerful Venosta family. Its commanding position is no accident: from here, the communication routes leading to the Mortirolo Pass were controlled, a vital link between Valtellina and the surrounding valleys.

The well-preserved tower has a quadrangular plan and comprises four storeys. Its solid, compact walls feature loopholes and small defensive openings, typical elements of military structures of the period, designed to ensure control and protection of the territory.

The neighbourhood extends around the tower, retaining to this day a compact and coherent urban layout that offers a glimpse into the daily life of a fortified settlement. The houses, built close together, form a harmonious whole that blends perfectly with the surrounding woodland.

From the heights of the hills overlooking the village, Pedenale appears as a silent sentinel watching over Mazzo di Valtellina, offering a privileged vantage point over the surrounding area. Today, it is a destination of great interest for those who love history, medieval architecture and the authentic landscapes of the Lombardy Alps.

Discover the fortified hamlet of Pedenale: medieval houses and a 12th-century tower in the woods above Mazzo di Valtellina.

[50811
76159,76170
28438
post-310363","what-to-see","type-what-to-see","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","village-conntection-mazzo-di-valtellina-it","what-to-see-region-and-provinces-lombardia-en","what-to-see-region-and-provinces-sondrio-en","what-to-see-category-attraction-monument
["GET
