Located in the lower part of the village of Rivello,<\/strong><\/a> not far from the historic centre, the Convent of Sant\u2019Antonio is one of the most fascinating complexes in Basilicata, where art, spirituality and history come together in a setting of great charm. Construction began in 1512 and, over the centuries, the complex has been enriched with works of considerable value.<\/p>\n

Beneath the arches in front of the church are preserved important 16th-century frescoes by Girolamo Todisco. Among these, one subject stands out as extremely rare in sacred iconography: the Crucifixion of the Franciscan Martyrs of Japan, a unique testimony to the link between Franciscan spirituality and the missionary dimension of the era.<\/p>\n

The church, remodelled in the Baroque style in the 18th century, features a rich yet balanced interior, where one can admire 16th-century paintings and a refined 17th-century wooden choir, an example of great craftsmanship.<\/p>\n

The cloister, also decorated with frescoes attributed to Todisco, is one of the most evocative spaces in the complex, whilst the refectory houses a splendid Last Supper painted by Giovanni De Gregorio, one of the most important artists on the Lucanian art scene between the 16th and 17th centuries.<\/p>\n

The upper floor of the convent now houses the archaeological museum, which displays artefacts from the areas around the Noce and Lao rivers, offering an even broader insight into the history of the region, from the earliest times to the modern era.<\/p>\n

The Convent of Sant\u2019Antonio is thus a site of great cultural significance, capable of surprising visitors with the richness of its artworks and the harmony between architecture, art and landscape.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
