According to tradition, it was Saint Mary Magdalene herself who freed Atrani from an attack by Alexandrian sailors sent by Manfredi during the struggles between the Papacy and the Empire, an episode that profoundly strengthened the community’s devotion.

The architecture of the collegiate church features a rare peculiarity: the presence of two distinct transepts. One is covered by vaults clad externally with majolica tiles, a typical feature of the Campania region that lends brightness and colour to the building, whilst the other is characterised by a flat roof, creating an interesting contrast between the different structural solutions.

Inside, the church houses a rich artistic heritage comprising statues, chapels and 18th-century paintings that recount the devotion and history of the village. Among the most significant works are a delicate Madonna as a Shepherdess, a sculpture dated 1789, and the painting of the Doubting Thomas by the painter Andrea Sabatini, a representative of the southern school of the 16th century.

The relics of the patron saint, housed within the collegiate church, are also of great spiritual significance. After many years, a secure display case containing sacred and precious objects has been reopened; these include strands of hair, bone fragments and parts of a tunic attributed to Saint Mary Magdalene, artefacts that continue to inspire popular devotion to this day.

The Collegiate Church represents the religious heart of Atrani, a place where history, faith and tradition blend with the unique landscape of the Amalfi Coast, offering visitors an authentic and evocative experience.

Discover the Collegiate Church of Atrani: a church dating from 1274 with a majolica dome, works of art and relics of Saint Mary Magdalene.

[50413
76127,76132
30159
post-310223","what-to-see","type-what-to-see","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","village-conntection-atrani-it","what-to-see-region-and-provinces-campania-en","what-to-see-region-and-provinces-salerno-en","what-to-see-category-place-of-cult
["GET
