In that year, Abbot Rinaldo di Farfa, whilst confirming certain holdings for the Abbey of San Pietro in Perugia, mentioned the church whilst excluding it from the properties being transferred.

During the 13th century, further evidence emerges, including the creation of the Deposition in 1236. During the 14th century, the life of the church is attested by documents relating to Prior Rinaldo Segnarelli and by a donation from a couple from Deruta, who ceded real estate and land in the surrounding area to the monastery. In 1381, the priory was entrusted by Pope Urban III to the Cassinese monk Carlo Caracciolo Napolitano.

It is likely that the Benedictine monks abandoned the site towards the end of the 14th century, following the serious conflicts that affected Deruta and the surrounding areas. In the centuries that followed, the building gradually fell into ruin, to the extent that in 1611 the local authorities called for urgent action to restore it. Two years later, in 1613, the church was annexed to the Seminary College of Perugia and restored.

The present building is not the original medieval one: it was in fact rebuilt, at an unspecified date, in the immediate vicinity of the older structure, the ruins of which were still visible until the mid-19th century. Today, Santa Maria di Roncione stands as a significant testament to the religious and monastic history of the Deruta area, linked to the fortunes of the great Umbrian abbeys and the transformations that have taken place over the centuries.

Discover the Church of Santa Maria di Roncione in Deruta, an ancient monastic site with medieval origins and a history linked to the abbeys of Umbria.

[50647
76222,76221
30159
post-309908","what-to-see","type-what-to-see","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","village-conntection-deruta-it","what-to-see-region-and-provinces-perugia-en","what-to-see-region-and-provinces-umbria-en","what-to-see-category-place-of-cult
["GET
