According to some theories, the site began as a hermitage, nestled in an isolated and spiritual setting, before evolving over time into a proper place of worship.

Over the centuries, the church has undergone numerous alterations, making it difficult to reconstruct its original layout with any precision. Certain architectural features, such as the traces of ancient terracotta arches visible on the right-hand exterior, suggest very early interventions, perhaps linked to supporting structures or earlier configurations of the building. Even the original orientation may have been altered over time.

The exterior features a simple exposed stone structure, covered by a gabled roof. On the right-hand side stands a smaller apse-shaped section, which corresponds to a side chapel inside. The bells are situated directly above the nave, supported by masonry elements that blend into the structure.

The interior is simple, comprising a single nave. On the right-hand side is the chapel connected to the external apse, whilst on the left there are blind arches and high-set windows, which help to illuminate the space. The chapel’s relationship with the nave appears somewhat incongruous, a sign of the alterations made over time.

Adjacent to the church stands an ancient convent, connected to the church building via a door situated to the left of the high altar. Recent restoration work has restored the exterior to a neat and pleasing appearance, whilst the interior retains few elements of stylistic significance, including fragments of a Baroque altar in white and polychrome marble and a small marble holy water font recessed into the wall.

Of particular interest is the 18th-century wooden crucifix, situated on the first archway on the left. Crafted from stuccoed and painted wood, it displays modest craftsmanship yet holds significant devotional value, despite the evident loss of paint in some areas.

Taken as a whole, the Church of San Teodoro is a place steeped in memory and simplicity, where traces of the past emerge amidst the stones and architectural alterations, telling an ancient story of spirituality, adaptation and community life.

Discover the Church of San Teodoro in Cerenzia: an ancient hermitage that has been transformed over time, featuring simple architecture and an 18th-century wooden crucifix.

[50574
76121,76124
30159
post-309882","what-to-see","type-what-to-see","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","village-conntection-cerenzia","what-to-see-region-and-provinces-calabria-en","what-to-see-region-and-provinces-crotone-en","what-to-see-category-place-of-cult
["GET
