The building was dedicated to Our Lady of the Rosary in the 15th century and was enlarged in the early 17th century to its present form.

The ceiling is entirely made up of decorated majolica tiles, measuring 20×40 cm, numbering around 1000 (currently 800), dating back to around 1615-1617. A unique work of its kind, it is partly on display at the Castelli Ceramics Museum, which preserves the broken or damaged tiles. The work is attributed to the ceramists of the Pompei family, in particular to Orazio Pompei, although the decoration of the church was a task that involved all the decorators in the village. The restoration was carried out by Antiche Fornaci Giorgi around 1972. The themes depicted on the tiles are varied: heraldic symbols, apotropaic animals, religious inscriptions and sayings, floral decorations and simple geometric designs.

Photos of Manola di Giulio.

Discover the Church of San Donato in Castelli, famous for its extraordinary ceiling composed of over 800 17th-century majolica tiles, a unique masterpiece of the ancient Abruzzo ceramic tradition.

[50535
76400,76411
30159
post-309864","what-to-see","type-what-to-see","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","village-conntection-castelli-it","what-to-see-region-and-provinces-abruzzo-en","what-to-see-region-and-provinces-teramo-en","what-to-see-category-place-of-cult
["GET
