The earliest records identify this site with the ancient church of Santa Maria de Castella, dating as far back as 970 and linked to the lords of the county of Giffoni.

Over the centuries, the building underwent various phases of development: as late as 1309 it was still feudal property, whilst between the late 15th and early 16th centuries, under the influence of Franciscanism, it was transformed from a simple single-nave hall into a more complex structure. When Giffoni was elevated to a diocese in 1531, the church had already taken on a Latin cross plan with three naves, a feature that made it worthy of being chosen as a cathedral by the Marquis del Vasto and the Princess of Francavilla. However, the new diocese was short-lived due to opposition from neighbouring bishoprics, such as those of Salerno and Acerno.

In the 17th century, the complex was further expanded with the construction of the adjacent hospital and the establishment of the Confraternity of the Immaculate Conception (1621), a sign of the local community’s deep-rooted religious faith.

Today, the church boasts an elegant Baroque interior, welcoming visitors into a space rich in art and devotion. The high altar, in polychrome marble, is surmounted by a niche containing a wooden group from Val Gardena depicting the Annunciation. The ceiling of the central nave is dominated by a large canvas measuring approximately 24 square metres, the work of local artist V. Stavolone, which depicts the encounter between the angel and the Virgin in an intense and spiritual atmosphere.

Also of great interest are the fourteen paintings of the Stations of the Cross, dating from the 17th century and attributed to the German school, which once belonged to the famous musician Johann Strauss and were subsequently donated to the parish. Completing the artistic heritage is a refined 18th-century wooden pulpit and, in the left aisle, a 16th-century panel depicting the Madonna del Carmine with the souls in Purgatory, beneath which a precious relic is kept: the Holy Thorn.

Even today, the Church of the Annunciation remains the principal religious landmark of Giffoni Valle Piana, a place where history, faith and art intertwine in a profound and authentic way.

Discover the Mother Church of the Santissima Annunziata in Giffoni Valle Piana, where Baroque art, medieval history and precious sacred works come together.

[50714
76127,76132
30159
post-309649","what-to-see","type-what-to-see","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","village-conntection-giffoni-valle-piana-it","what-to-see-region-and-provinces-campania-en","what-to-see-region-and-provinces-salerno-en","what-to-see-category-place-of-cult
["GET
