It stands on an ancient site, where the Church of San Cataldo once stood; this church was severely damaged by the earthquake of 1456 and gradually abandoned, though it continued to be mentioned in official documents until the end of the 18th century.

It was around the mid-16th century that the convent was built around the small surviving church, intended to house the Franciscan community. Over the centuries, the complex has undergone numerous alterations, particularly following the earthquake of 1703 and, later, that of 1930, which provided an opportunity for the building’s reconstruction and extension.

Today, the convent is spread over two floors, organised to meet the needs of monastic life. The lower floor houses the service areas, including the wool-working workshops, the refectory, the kitchen and the cellars, whilst the upper floor accommodates the friars’ cells, preserving the intimate and contemplative atmosphere typical of Franciscan settlements.

Despite the alterations, the complex retains important traces of the past. At the entrance there is a fresco depicting the Virgin of Mount Carmel, whilst frescoes dating from the 16th and 17th centuries can be seen in the rooms on the north-west side. The original structure also includes the wooden choir, a painted panel depicting the Madonna, and a wooden statue of the Virgin from the Baroque period.

Of particular interest is also a canvas painting from the Neapolitan Baroque school depicting St Francis, which enriches the convent’s artistic heritage and bears witness to the spread of the figurative culture of the time.

Today, the Convent of San Francesco continues to be a place of great historical and spiritual value, capable of recounting, through its spaces and its works, centuries of religious life in the heart of Zungoli.

Discover the Convent of San Francesco in Zungoli: history, frescoes and Franciscan art in the heart of Irpinia.

[55215
76128,76127
30159
post-309564","what-to-see","type-what-to-see","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","village-conntection-zungoli-it","what-to-see-region-and-provinces-avellino-en","what-to-see-region-and-provinces-campania-en","what-to-see-category-place-of-cult
["GET
